In master storyteller Andrew Kaplan’s action-packed thriller, the CIA sends its top agent to Southeast Asia to stop a war that threatens to be even bloodier than the conflict in Vietnam

The photograph in the CIA vault shows four men relaxing in the jungle, green berets draped over their rifles, enjoying a break from combat. On the day after the picture was taken, their friendship was torn apart forever. Now, ten years after the United States pulled out of Vietnam, the CIA has sent one of the men, Parker, to Thailand to track a troop movement across the Cambodian border, which is about to explode, luring the Americans back into another disastrous ground war.

When Parker disappears, the CIA deploys its best agent, Parker’s former friend Sawyer, in a secret operation code-named Dragonfire, to rescue Parker and prevent the war. But in the forbidden jungles of the Golden Triangle, a mysterious Asian beauty will lead Sawyer into a strange and savage world of opium traders, warlords, and militant factions, where nothing is as it seems and the only certainty is death.

Dragonfire A Novel edition by Andrew Kaplan Literature Fiction eBooks

This story starts off with a picture of army buddies in Vietnam circa 1970, “death friends” as the hill tribes would call them, and as it develops a prophetic tag if ever there was one. Fifteen years later, the middleman of the picture, Jack Sawyer, now a one-eyed CIA operative, is sent in after his army buddy Agent Parker who goes missing on a top secret mission to prevent a second Vietnam war over North Vietnam’s invasion of U.S. ally Thailand. I was amazed by how nothing was what it seemed or what Sawyer was told, or even what his CIA handler thinks. It’s probably a stretch that the U.S. government would be willing to make a deal with Cambodian rebels to trade arms and gold for their morphine, and have them fight their war for them. But, since the language and the settings seem so real, from expatriate U.S. solders, jaded English and American diplomats, Cambodian rebels and drug dealers, even Buddhist monks, one wonders if the author doesn’t have an inside track on what really went down. I mean, the Vietnamese General Lu, also in the earlier picture as an advisor, says they wouldn’t invade if they got diplomatic recognition, which Clinton gave them in 1995. All together a riveting and powerful tale of Southeast Asia.

Dragonfire A Novel edition by Andrew Kaplan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

What a fabulous novel. Of particular interest is the action races through Southeast Asia and I felt like I was actually there, experiencing the local color. It's a fast moving story and far more than the average even good thriller, as its steeped too in the depths of Oriental wisdom. So this is both an exciting story and explores the brutality of this piece of the planet, alongside its timeless treasures. Very highly recommended.
Over the top on the region, the people. Difficult to tie together. The ending was anti-climatic. This is not representative of his past work in my opinion.
Confusing and very hard to follow plot, Poor effort at post Vietnam CIA intrique.
Not bad if you just want something to kill time.
I was slightly disappointed with this book. The storyline was good, but the writing was a little sloppy. I did enjoy the story.
Know the author
This is my second Andrew Kaplan novel. I was interested in how he would treat the Vietnam war and got a head full of it. Andrew can penetrate your outer defenses with brutal depiction of events until you are worn, tired, disheveled, and soaked to the skin along with his protagonist. This novel is the story of a CIA agent trying to find a missing CIA agent in Cambodia with the Vietnamese and Khmer Rouge closing in from two sides. It reminds me that the Americans will never understand the Oriental mind and that Asia, for the European and American cultures, is an abyss that swallows up time, talent, capital and lives with abandon. Andrew takes you along on the journey. If you like this genre, you'll be engaged from beginning to end. Great read.
