The author was born in Racine, Wisconsin in 1943. At age seven he was sexually exploited by a clergy member. Later in life this bad experience resurfaced and he would try to deal with it. When he was 11 he had a near-death episode. After graduating high school in 1961, he joined the U.S. Navy and served his boot camp at Great Lakes, Illinois. He served one year on shore duty at Patuxent River, Maryland and almost two years on amphibious ships based at Little Creek, Virginia. During his three-year tour he participated in the first bomb shelter test to determine human behavior. He worked on the Great Lakes as a merchant seaman for one season and around four years on ships that were headquartered in Oakland, California. As a merchant seaman, the author became a Vietnam War Veteran. During his blue collar life he worked as a machine shop, gauge room attendant; gas station attendant; paper mill employee; bartender; construction worker; security guard; car mechanic; bailiff; grave digger; a meat counter attendant in a super market and his last full-time job was 15 years as a power plant operator at a maximum security prison in Green Bay, Wisconsin. His life-long dream of becoming a writer began to get traction after he attended a one-week school for creative writing in 1980. By the time he completed this book he would become known as a storyteller, activist, environmentalist, historian, speaker, a trophy winning pool player, outdoorsman, biographer and an award winning writer. The book contains 18 b/w interior photos.

No Time To Count The Life of a SmallTown Writer John J Mutter Jr 9781505332049 Books

This is one of those autobiographies that examines the extraordinary life of a regular guy. And a small town guy, as well...even better, a Wisconsin small town life, from a popular central WI vacation destination, so the physical setting of the local parts of John's life will have a ring of familiarity and nostalgia for many readers who know the area. It's hard not to like John Mutter...wether it's his childhood adventures or as an adult tying to make a living and survive life on the high seas, you end up in his corner rooting for him. Well written, he takes us on a journey that starts out casual, and ends up captivating. You do not have to be a king or president to have an interesting life, in fact you have to smile as this story unfolds and wonder what role fate, and luck and self determination plays in such a life. Well worth the cover price, not only for the story but for the well done book that will suit your bookshelf well. Especially nice for a cabin or summer vacation read.

No Time To Count The Life of a SmallTown Writer John J Mutter Jr 9781505332049 Books Reviews

John J. Mutter Jr. offers an interesting chronicle of what might ordinarily seem to be an ordinary life but is richly packed with experiences few people have ever had. From growing up in a tavern in a small Wisconsin community to joining the U.S. Navy and Merchant Marine for travel around the world, John captivates your attention with close calls and descriptive explanations. His activism on environmental issues and love for shooting pool overshadow the dark side of being abused by a priest in his youth. Once you start, No Time To Count is hard to put down, especially if you aspire to be a writer.
Very interesting person. He has gone places and done things that I could only dream about.
Very readable autobiography of an interesting man, interesting times and places.
