This book was beautiful and sweet. Based on the movie (and including pictures of various scenes) the book takes us on a journey with a little boy who doesn't understand right from wrong because he doesn't understand love. When he finds a cat and adopts it, he learns a valuable lesson about what it means to love others, and he teaches that lesson to his mother and to others as well. I bought this book because my husband told me about the movie, but I prefer books over movies. It was so good that I gave it to my 10-year old son for Christmas. I read it to him and he sobbed uncontrollably but wanted me to keep reading. I think even the 13-year old was touched. An excellent read for younger kids. More accessible than Old Yeller for younger readers, but same emotional rollercoaster.Tags : Amazon.com: J.T. JT Jane Wagner Gordon Parks Jr Books Reviews
I read this years ago now have had all 3 children read it. I think this was our 3rd copy.
I read this book as a child, I love that I was able to find it for my child.
I haven't thought about this book in YEARS until I saw a story on CNN about a cat that had been abused and then rescued/loved. I remembered the story that I read many times in childhood as well as the movie based on the book. I would like to find a copy of the movie but have not been able to locate one(help !).
I wholeheartedly agree with the previous comments that this book should be introduced to kids today. I know that I cried each time I read the story--but it teaches great lessons about from love to the pain of loss.
I look forward to my new copy arriving!
I loved the movie but sadly can't find. Settled for the book. Still a good story but it was short and a lot of pictures from the movie. Meh.
I bought my first two copies of J.T. about 30 years ago. I had a small class of special needs students who sat in a circle and listened to me read the book to them. They were enthralled. I still have one of those copies. The pictures are stills taken from an after school special which I never saw. I, too, enjoyed this story of a poor, young, troubled boy who learns responsibility by caring for an injured cat. His creativity and caring grow throughout the novel as does his maturity.
When I saw that J.T. was still in print, I ordered two more for my current classes. I plan to talk up this book to my younger students as some of them do like to borrow books to read.
I live overseas and teach English to underprivileged youngsters in my spare time.
This book remains a favorite. And we watched the movie on YouTube, as well.
The tragedy is that children are still growing up in the conditions depicted with subtlety and understatement by Jane Wagner. The book is as powerful in 2019 as it was when I read it to my children in the 1970s. One of the most effective ways to explain 'white priviledge' to young people would be to have them read this book. It is an American Tragedy that we allow children to grow up in these environments.
