Although it is well written, this book is probably the last domestic drama I will read for a while. I am finding the device of gathering family, usually contentious and in disagreement about what to do with the crumbling homestead that has meant so much to each of them in a different way, is wearing thin. Once again, the author is investigating the "Anna Karenina Principle" that every unhappy family is uniquely unhappy. T'aint so. There is usually a large number of siblings (check), each has issues and wants to either hold onto or let go of the family manse for their own personal gratification (check), there are several outside characters brought in to liven the gene pool (check), children who are wiser than their elders (check), and what is meant to be the unifying force of a shared past brought to life (check). I feel I've read this before, and having read some exceptional books lately, just find this is an often walked road I'd been on before.

I read this in a book club and I was the only one who liked it. The writing is more literary, and I think people who only really enjoy quick pop fiction reads this book is more tedious. I found the characters very believable and the character development was great. The writing is fabulous. If you're looking for a good book and don't need it to be a lightening read then this one is good. I'm just going to come out and say it if you're wealthy and you have a family vacation house somewhere you will probably love this.
I love the story and the character development. It was an easy read and a page Turner. I gave it a 4 because I was disappointed in the abrupt , seemingly unfinished ending. It made me think that maybe this is the first book in a series. (Or she ran out of time for a publishers deadline) lol. I would like to read more from this author
the book started off being promising but the author's descriptions tend to be too florid, in my opinion, which gets in the way of the pace of the story which is slow to begin with. until almost the end, where she decides to wrap things up quickly in a series of plot twists, some of which the reader can see coming and others not so much, but a while before that i had lost interest and continued only because i don't leave a book unfinished unless it is truly awful, which this book wasn't.
Tessa Hadley is a wonderful writer who does a great job of capturing life in contemporary Britain. Her characters are always interesting and well-developed, her writing is smooth and clear. I've read several of her novels and long been a fan, and I think that this is her best so far. It takes place during a summer reunion of four grown siblings at their grandparents house, the house that was the locus of their important childhood experiences. Through their interactions and some earlier experiences Hadley explores how the past informs and shapes the present and the future. It's a serious book but also very clever and written with a light touch.
When grown children along with a teenage daughter, family friend, and two young children return to their childhood home for a three-week vacation, no one suspects that what begins as a leisurely summertime visit will result in some dramatic events for them all. This story could be entitled "Behind the peephole." It seems that the close quarters are conducive to learning one another's secrets. The English countryside is conducive to many descriptions of nature which aren't my favorite thing so I read over these passages quickly. Part I of this book is the vacation, and then in Part II we are taken back in time (hence the title of this book) to the time when the protagonists are young children. I wasn't that interested when we are forced to return to their roots, but I eventually became more attached to the characters. Still, I was very happy to finally return to the original story of the grown children on their vacation. This is a rather odd story. But I will say that I became very interested in the welfare of the characters. I could feel empathy for them. Towards the end, I couldn't put the book down. I became a bit teary-eyed at times but never really had a good cry. Sometimes I wanted the author to get on with the story and I was thinking that three stars was enough for this book and then when I found myself getting attached to the characters and interested in their drama that four stars was the way to go (although 3.5 might be more accurate!).
To say this book is written from multiple points of view is an understatement. This is written in omniscient third and we are in everyone's head in every scene, except the opaque Molly, 16-year-old daughter of Roland, the brother of the many main characters of the book Alice (a gushy emotional type), Fran (the non-helicopter mother of two smallish children, Ivy and precocious, but malleable Arthur), and Harriet (the intense, human rights lawyer sister.) Rounding out this crowd are Pilar, Roland's third (Argentine) wife, and Kasim, the son of Alice's long-time, but wandering lover. They have all convened on the grandparents' shamble of a country house to make a decision whether to hang onto it or not. That's the present part of the book. The Past has to do with the siblings' mother who has come back home with three her children (Fran hasn't been born yet) to her parents' home because her marriage is on the rocks. She makes motions to starting a "new" life, including looking for a house with a realtor, an high school classmates, she beds in an empty house. Many people objected that this book is about a not very interesting upper middle class family. Really, the problem was that she kept pulling her punches. The past part of the book gave no real insight on the present and vice versa. I could tell you more, but In effect, there are no real spoilers, because nothing happens, despite a lot of groundwork being laid - regarding the abandoned house, Pilar's past, Kasim's seduction of Molly. Was this a horrible waste of time? No. But this book could have been so much more.
