The Perils of Pleasure Pennyroyal Green Series Julie Anne Long 9780061341588 Books

So many Regency Era romances follow a tried and true, if hackneyed, formula. The Perils of Pleasure is anything but typical or formulaic. It is a deep breath of fresh air in a genre burdened with over sexualized tripe.

The male protagonist, Colin is a young London rake making his march to the gallows for a crime he didn't commit. Fortunately he is saved quite dramatically by Madeleine, a woman hired to choreograph his rescue. The successful rescue sets off a series of adventures, discoveries and resolutions that are surprising, intriguing, inventive and original.

Apart from a few formatting errors, this is one of the best stories in this genre I've read in a long, long time. There is humor, intrigue and great poignancy. The main characters are likable and sympathetic as they grow and develop throughout the story. The intrigue is well developed and unpredictable and the plot twist at the end was truly surprising. The ultimate resolution for our two main characters was by no means assured but was ultimately, deeply satisfying.

Be advised: there are two fairly graphic sex scenes between the two main characters, but rather than being gratuitous sexual interludes, I felt them to be a natural element in their developing relationship. In my opinion, the scenes were not included to heighten prurient interest but to show character and relationship development and as such are some of the best I've read.

Bottom line: If this is a sample of Ms. Long's prowess as a writer, I will happily read more of her work. Well done, Ms. Long, very well done.

The Perils of Pleasure Pennyroyal Green Series Julie Anne Long 9780061341588 Books Reviews

I need to send a few thankful thoughts to whomever first turned my eye towards the Pennyroyal Green series (and to myself for listening ;-) ) because it has turned out to be one of my very favorites.

I actually started Pennyroyal Green with the most recent book, It Started with a Scandal. It's been a favorite of 2015. Then I jumped back to book four, I Kissed an Earl, because it directly ties to ISwaS. Loved it as well. Then I read Like No Other Lover (#2), which was once again, a big hit with me. All books obviously come after The Perils of Pleasure, and all mentioned the now-mythical Colin Eversea and his love Madeline. Each book made me more curious about the legendary man, and then I thought "Hey idiot, why don't you just read his book?".

So I bought The Perils of Pleasure (in digital and print because I knew it would go on my "keeper shelf") and in what will be no surprise, I loved it. Every single word on every single page.

The Perils of Pleasure is at its core a romance, but also a mystery. The book begins with Colin Eversea headed to the noose, framed for a murder he didn't commit. In a flash of smoke and chaos, Colin is rescued by the mysterious Madeline Greenway, who is in turned nearly murdered soon thereafter. Who framed Colin, who paid for his rescue, and why is Madeline now in danger as well, are the questions Colin and Madeline are on the race to answer during the next four days. Why four days? Because Colin is determined to stop the wedding of his childhood love, who is marrying his older brother. Because that's not awkward at all.

As Colin and Madeline trace the clues, they begin to feel, you guessed it, an intense attraction. Colin has been without physical comfort in a while, Madeline for far longer. The stressful quest they're on, and the fact they get on so very well has them reluctantly growing closer, which is so not the plan. Colin is in love with the brother's fiancé (or does he only think he is?) and Madeline has plans to leave her painful past behind and start a new life in America. How the two go from their intended path to falling in love was an absolute DELIGHT. Very few authors have made me feel for and believe in the conviction of a couple like Julie Anne Long. Their journey was tentative and fraught with concealed emotions, and a love of which both are terrified. Let me tell you, the last three chapters held me enraptured and breathless. I could not and did not want to look away. Perfectly executed and in a rare event in romance, our heroine makes the grand gesture.

Having made an odd path in my reading of the Pennyroyal Green series, I didn't count on being surprised. I WAS WRONG because near the end I was completely blindsided by the reveal of a secret so big and destructive and heartbreaking, that I'm seeing the entire series with brand new eyes. I think this is calling for a series marathon, including those I've already read.

Pennyroyal Green is my new obsession. Every historical romance fan should consider it a must-read.
This is another one of those three stars reviews that is actually a positive one. I liked this book. I did. It just wasn't one that clicked for me perfectly. I actually picked this one up after reading an excellent scene from the second book in this series, Like No Other Lover. I couldn't begin a series in the middle, so I grabbed this one first. It is a nice enough introduction to the world of Pennyroyal Green, even though most of the book does not take place there. In fact, this was one of the things that kept this book from really soaring, in my opinion. It is obvious that there is a great deal of back story involved in this village. There are two warring families with many characters who seem as if they might have interesting stories associated with their histories. Unfortunately, in this book these characters are barely mentioned. Their histories are alluded to, their personalities and back stories explained. But ultimately we don't really get to spend much time in this place that lends its name to the entire series. That really creates a problem in this story.

The entire story is really a whodunnit mystery. Colin Eversea has been wrongly accused of murder and sentenced to die. Luckily he is saved from certain death through an ingenious plan that almost works until his savior is almost killed herself. These events throw Colin and Madeleine together in an unlikely and fairly fragile alliance, rushing to prove Colin's innocence and figure out who might have tried to end Madeleine's life. Colin and Madeleine make an adequate pair for this story. Their banter has moments of hilarity and tenderness at times. Their relationship, whether it was as rescuer/rescued, common associates, or as a romantic leaning couple, formed the entirety of this story. It is made or broken on their heads, and for me they didn't quite work out. They were nice enough, but not extraordinary. The romantic tension was not as strong as it could have been, and I never totally felt the romantic connection between these two. I was happy with the HEA ending. I was happy to read the story. It just didn't really move me like I hoped.

I was pretty disappointed in the ultimate conclusion to the whodunnit. The villain was never really introduced sufficiently in the novel. The first real deep introduction to him came as he was discovered to be the culprit. And then there was an interesting twist that came during the "confession" scene that would have been REALLY interesting to explore more. Yet it wasn't. It was just thrown out as a way to get this story over with, and I felt as if a great opportunity was lost.

Having said all of that, this is still a nice story, and I do plan to continue to read the next books in this series. I see potential in Julie Anne Long's writing, and I am curious to see if the further books in the series improve, especially if they dig A LOT deeper into the world of Pennyroyal Green. Three stars. I simply liked this one.
